Clinical Champion News: Dr. Frederick Han

Frederick T. Han, MD, FACC, FHRS

When the University of Utah joined PaTH in 2015, the network gained not only another terrific partner institution, and maintained leadership by Dr. Rachel Hess (PaTH co-Principal Investigator and Utah Site Principal Investigator ), but also established new links with the many researchers, clinicians, patient partners, and stakeholders in Utah who make PaTH’s work possible. One of those people is Frederick T. Han, MD, FACC, FHRS.

Dr. Han, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah who specializes in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiology, is one of the local co-investigators for both the ADAPTABLE study and the Atrial Fibrillation (AF) cohort.

“For me, it was a great opportunity to join a team of investigators (all of whom are great individuals) with the common goal of participating in a multicenter research network focused on patient outcomes.”

“Fred exemplifies the clinician champion in PaTH!” says Dr. Hess. “His contributions to all of our cardiology work, including finding additional collaborators, is enormous."

Although data collection can be challenging, Dr. Han has found joining PaTH and working through those obstacles to be rewarding.

“By keeping in mind that the data we are collecting really has the opportunity to impact our patients and their satisfaction with their treatment, figuring out how to overcome various challenges makes the work rewarding.”

Along with his work with the ADAPTABLE study and AF cohort, Dr. Han maintains a busy schedule that includes working in clinics, doing procedures in electrophysiology labs, giving lectures to cardiology fellows, conducting electrophysiology fellow teaching sessions, and research projects.

“I just wish that I had more time in a day!” says Dr. Han.

For Dr. Han, it wasn’t difficult to integrate PaTH research into his practice.

“It’s always been an important goal for me to maintain research in my practice,” he says. “When I was a cardiology fellow, a piece of advice from one of my mentors always stuck with me: ‘As a physician, you have a responsibility not only to read the research but also to write the research that is going to help our patients.’ This piece of advice has been something that continues to motivate me today.”

Dr. Han hopes that his work with PaTH will improve the care of chronic conditions, like AF, to increase patient satisfaction and avoid traditional outcomes such as hospitalization.

“I am glad to be part of such an enthusiastic and motivated group of people participating in this research network,” says Dr. Han. “I’m really looking forward to helping develop pathways that can help us take care of patients better and more efficiently.”
