MEET A PATIENT PARTNER

Jim Carns
Jim’s Story: On July 25, 2010, Jim was diagnosed with Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and on September 22, 2013 he was the recipient of a single lung transplant. Jim is a Patient Partner with the Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis cohort. In October 2014 Jim was approached about his interest in being a part of a research team to develop ways to let patients and other stakeholders learn about findings that may matter to them about IPF. As a Patient Partner, he knew this was another way for him to have the “voice” of the patient heard about IPF. He is not only a Patient Partner for the PaTH Network, but also an Ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, an Ambassador for the Donate Life, and for the Gift of Life. Speaking on behalf of these organizations allows Jim to tell his story of living with pulmonary fibrosis to groups and individuals living with this dreaded disease. Jim also wrote a book, “New Mountains to Climb”, telling his story about his journey with IPF. Jim is retired and he and his wife Karen are doing things that neither of them thought would be possible when he was diagnosed in 2010.

What is a patient or community partner?
Patient Partners work with our research teams to shape meaningful research questions and develop ways to let patients and other stakeholders learn about findings that may matter to them.
