Meet PaTH: Heather Coulter

Heather Coulter, M.Ed., and her family in Utah.

As a Community Engagement Specialist for the PaTH Network, Heather Coulter, M. Ed., University of Utah, facilitates collaborations between researchers and community members to help researchers best understand how to work with patients. She also recruits and trains patient partners, helps plan engagement-focused meetings such as the recent stakeholder meeting at Temple, and consults with the PaTH team working to get the MyPaTH Story Booth launched in Utah.

"I enjoy it," she says. "It’s always something new."

Q: Did you always want to work in community engagement?
Heather Coulter:
I originally wanted to be a journalist and news broadcaster. In a way I get to use those skills because I learn about people and what they need and what they do and how to give them more tools to succeed and work together.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
HC:
I love the outdoors. Hiking, biking, swimming, walking, boating, kayaking, I just love being outside. I’m pretty busy with work so anytime I can get outside, I love that.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this fall?
HC:
Taking my son, who’s 15, to Washington, D.C. for the first time to show him the capital and the history of our country. He wants to be a lawyer, so that’ll be good for him. I’m also looking forward to being with family to watch my one-year-old take his first steps because he’s so close, he’s almost there.

Q: What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?
HC:
At 16, I was in a car accident and broke my back, so I was bedridden for a year. I wondered if I would regain my mobility. That was a life-changing experience for me. It made me more compassionate and empathetic towards others. I could say a lot here, but that’s something that’s not too embarrassing to share.

Q: What’s your dream vacation?
HC:
I love water and the sun, so I would love to go to a very secluded, peaceful beach. Maybe somewhere tropical and warm, like Hawaii.

Q: What is a goal you hope to accomplish?
HC:
I’d love to learn a new language. Any language, but Spanish seems like what we all need to learn. I have several children who speak fluent Spanish, so I would love to have that.

Heather’s Favorites
Movie: Practical Magic. I watch it every Halloween, it’s hysterical.
Musician: Michael Bublé and Adele.
Book: Unbroken and The Help. I love historical fiction.
Food: Dark chocolate-covered fruits and nuts.
